everything but the kitchen sink

oh heck, i'll throw that in too!=)

these are my babies veggies getting a bath. when it's not organic csa season, the veggies get a nice liquid soap-nut soak.

though i was fortunate to find organic oranges and lemons at a fair price, these were still soaked and rinsed before going in my lemonade pitcher (the one i received from the lovely hanane).

i've learned a trick for super tasty lemonade - add lots of lemon zest! i also added an orange and some coconut water.

the other night i had my friends and former vegan cooking class teachers carol and lisa over for a meal of raw pizza, salad, and coffee ice cream.

this time i used the ice cream maker carol got me at a yard sale. the outcome is really not much different then freezing it in a container, though the ice cream maker speeds up the time. it was ready in about 30 minutes. if you have the patience, an ice cream maker is really not necessary!

no picture again - sorry! it's like i'm afraid it's going to melt and disappear or something. i do have a pic of the pickies i served before our dinner: hummus with just like ritz raw crackers, falafel and lime chips.

cashews and sunflower seeds subbed the hemp seeds i didn't have called for in the cracker recipe. everyone liked the "buttery" crackers, though i think i will use less salt next time. they're almost too ritz cracker-y.=)

the other day i captured some cute moments with bubby and evie focused on painting...

cooking...

and saving the world! (the cap and goggles make up his "superhero costume".=)

  4. I like your version of lemonade, very nice...something else for me to try. Speaking of trying new things, I had kombucha tea for the first time yesterday and really liked it so we might start making our own now.

  5. So lovely post! I'll make hummus tomorrow! I'm soaking the chickpeas at the moment.

I love organic fruits, I saw beautiful organic lemons in an eco shop (I call it like this, they sell organic food and many vegan things there) last time. They looked so cute and different from common lemons. I'll buy them next time! Are organic foods pricey in the US? Here they are. So we can't buy them all the time.

  6. thanks friends!=)

jane- you sure can! i'm kicking myself for not preserving zucchini from last summer. i'm buying non-organic, unfortunately.=(

very cool, mr. h! i drink a 2 oz. glass of kombucha most mornings as my daily dose of probiotics. i love it.

lela - yes, organic is a bit more expensive, but not too bad. it helps to learn which stores have the best deals, join a csa or grown your own!=)

i don't buy organic all the time, especially during winter. that is why i soak and rinse them well - to minimize the amount of pesticides we consume.

  7. we all would be fighting over that pitcher of lemonade. how did you sweeten it? i just have to make some, my kids adore lemonade from scratch.
    peace & raw health,

  8. That's such a good idea about the soapnuts - I love using them for clothes washing but I never thought to use them for soaking fruit and vegetables!

  9. elizabeth - john would have finished the pitcher in one day if he didn't have to share it with our guests.=) i used wholesome brand evaporated cane juice sugar. not the healthiest sweetener but ok in moderation, i guess. it's not something we drink everyday.

antony - i've read that a ten minute soak in a solution of soap nuts removes 95% of surface pesticides and chemical residues. i use just a capful of liquid soap nut. you can make your own liquid soap nut by boiling the nuts. there are how-tos online. i've also read you can use soap nuts for shampoo, toothpaste, and as an insect-repellent!
